Wood Burners and Multi Fuel stoves have been hitting the headlines recently, in particular due to the emissions. The new regulations due to come into force in 2022 are designed to combat this issue. We frequently get asked about these new regulations in the showroom, so we have decided to put together a quick and easy guide for both current stove owners and prospective stove owners.
In simple terms; Eco-design is a programme to lower emissions being rolled out throughout Europe.
Ecodesign comes into force here in the UK in 2022.
No. Brexit will have no effect on Ecodesign, it will still become a legal requirement in 2022.
The Particulate Matter (OR PM) Limit for Ecodesign stoves is 55% percent lower than the limit for DEFRA exempt stoves.
NOTE: Prior to January 1st 2022, if you live in a smoke-controlled area then the stove must still be DEFRA exempt.
The short answer is; no.
After the 1st January 2022 it will become illegal to manufacture or sell a stove that isn’t Ecodesign Ready. However, stoves already installed or already in the supply chain (manufactured before 1st January 2022) are exempt from this.
Some stove manufacturers aim to switch to only manufacturing Ecodesign compliant stoves by 2020.
Ecodesign stoves have more stringent limits when it comes to emissions, meaning they produce fewer particulate emissions.
Simply put; they are kinder to the environment.
