Wood Burner Servicing and Chimney Sweeping: Protect Your Home from Chimney Fires

This is a subtitle for your new post

A wood-burning stove or multifuel stove can provide warmth, comfort and atmosphere throughout the colder months. However, regular wood burner servicing and professional chimney sweeping are essential for keeping your appliance properly maintained and reducing the risk of chimney fires.

Flamecraft provides wood burner servicing, multifuel stove servicing and chimney sweeping to help homeowners maintain their stoves, keep their flues clear and identify potential problems before they become more serious.

Why Is Regular Wood Burner Servicing Important?

Over time, wood-burning and multifuel stoves can develop problems that affect their performance and safety. Door rope seals can deteriorate, fire bricks can become damaged, and internal components can suffer wear through regular use.

Professional wood burner servicing helps identify these issues and assess the condition of your appliance. Addressing wear and damage early can help maintain efficient operation and reduce the likelihood of unexpected problems during the heating season.

Whether you use your stove every day throughout winter or only occasionally, arranging regular stove maintenance is an important part of responsible ownership.

Chimney Sweeping Helps Reduce the Risk of Chimney Fires

One of the most important reasons to arrange regular chimney sweeping is to remove soot and combustible deposits from your chimney or flue.

When wood and other permitted fuels burn, deposits can accumulate inside the flue. Creosote, a flammable tar-like substance, can build up under certain burning conditions. If these deposits ignite, they can cause a chimney fire, potentially resulting in serious damage to your property.

Professional chimney sweeping removes accumulated soot and deposits, helping maintain a clear flue and allowing problems such as obstructions or excessive build-up to be identified.

Chimney sweeping and stove servicing perform different but complementary jobs. Sweeping focuses on the chimney or flue, while servicing checks the stove itself. Both should be considered when planning your annual stove maintenance.

Signs Your Wood Burner or Chimney Needs Attention

Do not ignore changes in how your stove operates. Signs that your appliance or flue may need checking include:

  • Smoke entering the room when the stove is in use.
  • Poor ventilation or problems with the chimney draught.
  • Excessive soot or tar-like deposits around the stove or flue.
  • Damaged door seals or cracked fire bricks.
  • Unusual smells or visible signs of damage.

These symptoms can have several causes and should be assessed by a suitably qualified professional. If you suspect a chimney fire, leave the property and call 999. Do not continue using the stove until it has been checked.

When Should You Book a Chimney Sweep?

The appropriate sweeping frequency depends on the fuel used, how often the stove operates and the manufacturer's recommendations. As a general guide, annual sweeping is a common minimum, but some installations require more frequent attention.

Booking chimney sweeping before the main heating season can help you prepare your stove for regular winter use. It is also sensible to arrange servicing at suitable intervals so that worn components and other maintenance issues can be identified.

Always burn the correct fuel for your appliance and follow the manufacturer's operating instructions.

The clearskies scheme has been recently introduced, and many of the wood burners and multi fuel stoves we sell have a clear skies mark. However many of our customers see this logo and are left wondering what it actually means. Therefore we have put together the basics explaining what clear skies is, and how this potentially will effect choosing a wood burner or multi fuel stove.

It is the season for hot chocolate, fluffy blankets, hot water bottles and curling up in front of a roaring fire. With the days getting sorter and the nights getting longer it means we are busy installing wood burning and multi fuel stoves in homes. Like for many this year has been challenging, and we have worked tirelessly to ensure our customers will still receive the best service possible from us. We also understand that with the challenges of the past year many of us we are looking for more affordable heating options for this winter. Over the summer we have had many discussions about the issues we are all facing, and we knew we wanted to do everything we could to ensure our customers can still enjoy owning a wood burner or multi fuel stove. On top of the challenges this year has brought us all we are also very aware that since the announcement of the incoming Ecodesign regulations more and more of our customers are coming to us looking for Ecodesign 2022 Approved wood burners and multi fuel stoves. While we had Ecodesign stoves available, we wanted to give our customers more options to choose from. So, we knew we had two targets: 1. Have wood burning and multi fuels stove options available for a range of different budgets. 2. Expand our range of Ecodesign Approved stoves. We went through many different ideas until we finally realised the solution was in front of us (literally in a pile of brochures we had from a trade show we visited last year). A manufacturer that had a huge range of Ecodesign 2022 approved wood burning and multi fuel stoves that meet our own guidelines for quality and design (as well as being manufactured in the UK), and to top that off offering a range of price points that would allow us to offer more affordable stoves. So of course we gave them a call.
