Overwhelmed by choice? Here is our quick guide to help you navigate all the options and build your perfect fireplace.

Please Note:

Until we have completed a site survey we cannot guarantee we can build all of our options (and some options that are found on the internet). This is because we must comply with UK building regulations.

We have created this step by step guide to help you develop ideas of what you would like and to help guide you through the wide range of options available, it is not a guarantee and should be used as guidelines only.

We strongly advise having a site survey preformed as soon as possible so we can take measurements and advise you on what is possible to avoid potential disappointment.

Decide on style

Traditional, contemporary, rustic, country chic, industrial etc.

Deciding on the style of finish you would like early on will be extremely helpful when picking out your options for a bespoke fireplace.

It means you will streamline your choices as some options will suit your chosen aesthetic whereas others will not.

This is also a good time to browse our gallery, home magazines and the internet for inspiration.

If you would like advice on how to achieve your chosen style, please feel free to visit our showroom to discuss your choices with our sales team.

Choose your stove (or stoves)

Pick the woodburner(s) or multifuel stove(s) you would like.

We recommend doing this after you've considered the style you would like as it helps streamline the range of stoves available to you. It also helps you when considering the following design options and will help you imagine what your finished fireplace may look like.

Remember you can consider as many or as few fires as you would like.

Decide on the structure

The shape of the fireplace & whether you would like anything built in (like a log store) etc.

Once you've settled on your chosen aesthetic, then its time to consider the design of the fireplace.

If you haven't already looked for inspiration in our gallery, home magazines and on the internet, we do recommend having at least a quick look now. Many of our customers have found it extremely helpful during the design process.

In this phase you can start to build the image in your head of exactly what you want.

Ask yourself questions like;

  • What is the shape of your dream fireplace (it doesn't have to be all straight lines)?
  • How wide would ideally like your fireplaces opening to be?
  • Do you want to include built in log stores, storage, shelving, media units etc?

If you would like advice on the structure of your new fireplace, please book in for a site survey to discuss your options in detail with our registered HETAS installer.

Once you have an idea of style, the stove and the structure of your dream fireplace, we then recommend going onto the next options.

The following steps are broken down to help guide you through the process.

However, the options are mix-and-match and therefore you may find yourself going back over steps.

We have listed these steps based on how we run through all the options in the showroom.

Decide the design

Brickwork & Plastering

The colour, texture and overall finish of the type of brick you choose and incorporating plastered areas can completely change the appearance of your fireplace. Considering the types of brick and if you want to incorporate plaster will have a big effect on the finished result.

For example, many customers opt for partial or full plastering when aiming for a more contemporary finish, however a partial plastered brick fireplace can also achieve a rustic aesthetic depending on the choice of chamber, hearth and optional extras, such as beams.

Firstly we would advise deciding if you would like to incorporate plastering into your new fireplace to achieve your desired aesthetic. You can opt for partial plastering (we would only plaster certain areas such as the chamber, or the the chimney stack etc), a full plastered chimney breast or none at all.

For those of you who would like to include partial plastering or none at all, then we would advise considering the shape, colour and texture of the bricks you would like to use.

With so many variations of brick on the market, you can change the overall aesthetic of the fireplace simply through the choice of brick. We advise considering your brick options as we want to make sure you will get the right look for your tastes.

Another thing to consider in terms of brickwork is if you want the bricks to be laid in a certain pattern for a more decorative effect.

For more information, to discuss your options and too see example pictures of the types of bricks we currently have available, please contact our showroom.

Your fireplace chamber.

When we refer to a fireplace chamber we refer to the walls (back & sides) inside the recess of the fireplace. These are the walls that will surround/be closest to your new woodburner or multifuel stove. Therefore a well chosen fireplace chamber can enhance the appearance of your stove.

There are many options available for your fireplace chamber, for example:

  • You can opt to keep your brickwork exposed.
  • You can have the chamber plastered.
  • You can tile the fireplace chamber.
  • You can have brick slips inside the chamber.
  • You can choose from the range of pre-made fireplace chambers we have available for order.

The style of fireplace chamber you choose can have a dramatic effect on the over all appearance of your new fireplace, e.g. it can make an otherwise contemporary design appear more rustic, or make a rustic design appear more industrial.

Mix and match the fireplace chambers with our other options to achieve your dream fireplace in the style you want.

Decide the design

Your Hearth.

As with the other options listed your choice of hearth can have a dramatic effect on the overall appearance of your fireplace.

Examples of our hearth options include:

  • Slabbed Charcoal Hearth
  • Various Natural Stones
  • Various Tiling options
  • Brick
  • Concrete

As with the chambers we advise you to mix and match the hearths with our other options until you find the perfect match! Many of our hearth options can achieve multiple aesthetics. Such as our natural stones being able to achieve both contemporary and traditional styles depending on what you match them with.

Decide the design - Optional Extras

Beams, shelves, facia panels & surrounds.

Whereas every fireplace will need to include the brickwork, plastering, chamber and hearth options in some form. Beams, shelves, facia panels and surrounds are a completely optional finishing touch. However this doesn't mean they don't deserve as much attention. As with all our other options you can mix and match them to achieve different styles, and often they can change the overall appearance of your fireplace.

Wooden Beams, Shelves & Facia Panels

Wooden beams, shelves and facia panels are one of those finishing touches that can really bring your fireplace together, creating that homely aura we all love. We have a wide range of options available to you. Some of our products even give you the ability to choose the colour and texture of the beam, shelf or facia panel, allowing you to match it with your current furniture.

Wooden, Natural Stone & Other types of Surrounds

Unlike a beam, shelf or facia panel that will sit above your fireplace opening, a surround will frame it. As with a beam, a surround can bring your fireplace together and can enhance the particular aesthetic you have chosen. We have a range of surrounds available in natural stones, various wooden finishes and more. Styles range from ornate to simple designs, ensuring their is a surround to suit all tastes.

For more information and to view our surround options please click here.

Non-combustible Wooden Effect Beams, Facia Panels & Surrounds

This option is commonly used when the woodburner or multifuel stove has a high distance to combustibles, but you still want the appearance of a wooden beam, facia panel or surround. However this doesn't mean you should just toss them aside unless you have to have one. We have many options available in this range in different styles and finishes that are not available in 'real' wood.

For more information and to view our non-combustible wooden effect beams, facia panel and surrounds options please click here.

These are our the options that have the most demand, however we love a challenge so if you have seen something you like that we haven't listed please contact us and discuss it with us directly.

All new brick fireplaces and alterations to existing fireplaces are designed specifically for each customer. Due to the bespoke nature of this product we do politely ask that you book a survey with our HETAS engineer for more tailored advice.
